TRUMBULL WHOLE HOUSE MAKEOVER

The Stern Residence was quite a challenge. The Owners contacted me when they were interested in buying the original house. They wanted my opinion about the possibilities of remodeling the house, a 1950’s one bedroom ranch, into a home that would service them well, both now and in the future. After an initial walk through and evaluation, I told them that the house had the basics to start from, but would require an extensive revamping and some additions necessary to create their future home, Their wish list included; a front entry that would create a sense of arrival, living room, powder room, large kitchen with dining area and family room that would have an open feeling, laundry, and a master bedroom suite with a full bath and walk-in closets, all to be located on the first floor. The second floor would need to accommodate two bedrooms, a central bath, space for a home office area and an unfinished space for future expansion. The lot was small and the original house was sited closer to the street and side yards than the latest zoning regulations required, so after some preliminary design sketches we produced drawings of the floor plans and elevations. Variances were applied for and approvals were granted so we could expand the footprint of the house.

This was the original floor plan

As you can see the original home was quite basic. It lacked many of the areas that were on the wish list and definitely did not have the square footage necessary to accomplish the Owners goals. Expanding to the sides was not a good option, so additions to the rear, where we had the most room and a couple of bump outs to the front to add the required space was the direction to go.

The final design accommodates the entire wish list and created a home with curb appeal that is comfortable to live and entertain in. It is a great improvement to the neighborhood and won an area beautification award from the Town.

The photo’s that follow show the full impact of the transformation that added the space they were looking for and the curb appeal that greets the neighbors and all of the Owners guests as they arrive.
